Star Studded Lineup For Celebrity Softball Classic in Kingston in 1992. Kirk Muller, Scott Arniel & Friends

Dan Aykroyd welcomes Bobby Orr to Kingston and Queen’s Richardson Stadium for the Kirk Muller/ Scott Arniel Celebrity Softball Classic in July, 1992. Orr was the biggest attraction of the day, he received the loudest ovation and hit a homerun into the right field bleachers late in the game, in the football stadium reconfigured for softball.

‘I’ve worked with Ronald McDonald House and various other charities, and it’s truly a wonderful feeling to know you’re doing something that will benefit someone else, someone who hasn’t had the same breaks as perhaps the rest us,” Orr explained to the Whig Standard’s Patrick Kennedy.

“When you have been asked by two individuals like Kirk and Scott, it’s easy to do. They’re fine young men who get involved in a community. Kingston can be very proud of them.”

Six-thousand fans turned out to help raise $50,000 dollars for Kingston’s Almost Home. Arniel of the Buffalo Sabres and Muller of the New Jersey Devils called upon many of their hockey friends to participate in the friendly softball game.

Other NHL celebrities included Doug Gilmour, Hockey Night In Canada’s Don Cherry, Guy Carbonneau, Denis Savard, John MacLean and Brendan Shanahan. Aykroyd and current Leafs broadcaster Jim Ralph did the commentary for the game.

Afterwards, an exclusive group of 400 guests were invited back to Aykroyd’s home on Loughborough Lake for drinks, an outdoor BBQ, along with music, dancing and a party that went well into the night.

A great event for Arniel and Muller who have given a lot back to their hometown. Over 30 years later both are still active in the NHL, Arniel is head coach of the Winnipeg Jets and Muller an assistant coach in Washington.
