Amerks To Honour Former Fan Favourite Scott Metcalfe.

The former Kingston Canadian played 9-seasons in Rochester and was a Calder Cup Champion.

The AHL’s Rochester Americans will honour the memory of Scott Metcalfe when they host the Laval Rocket Friday night Feb 27th. Metcalfe, who died suddenly in June, 2025 at age 58, spent 9 years of his 14-year pro career in Rochester and retired there, a favourite of both Amerk fans and his teammates.

Amerks all-time leading scorer Jody Gage remembers Metcalfe, “Scott had a larger-than-life personality and it resonated with Amerks fans all over Rochester.” Adding, “He did so much for the community, even well after retirement, calling Rochester his home. He was absolutely beloved in the locker room.”

Metcalfe a member of the Amerks Hall of Fame, was a big part of the team’s last Calder Cup championship in 1996. In his early years in Rochester playing on a line with Rob Ray and Kevin Kerr the trio accumulated a stunning 993 penalty minutes in a single season. “’He was the most ultimate teammate I ever played with,” said Ray, a longtime NHL’er and broadcaster. “I learned more from him in a year and a half than any other player. He taught me how to respect the game.”

Kingston fans will remember Metcalfe from his days with the Kingston Canadians in the late 1980’s. Metcalfe played 231 games in Kingston, scoring 103 goals and collecting 273-points, putting him 9th in franchse history. He finished his OHL career in Windsor.

Metcalfe was a first-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 1985, but only played a couple of games for the Oilers. Metcalfe was also part of Team Canada at the 1987 World Junior Hockey Championships, where the infamous ‘Punch Out In Piestany” brawl took place with the Soviets, resulting in both teams being ejected from the tournament. Thanks to Jim Clarke for the heads up on this special night for Metcalfe.
